Rachel Whiteread Short Biography
Artist and sculptor, born in London, UK. She studied at Brighton Polytechnic and the Slade School of Art in London, and became known for her casts of ordinary domestic objects, such as wardrobes and baths. In 1993 she captured the public imagination with her life-sized cement cast of a three-storey terraced house in East London. The project gained her the Turner Prize and was demolished soon afterwards. Later work includes a plastercast Untitled (Room 101) (2003) on view in the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 2005 she was commissioned to create a sculpture for the Tate Modern gallery's giant Turbine Hall. |
